Well, I'm back from hospital and working in the office, although obviously not doing any practical work yet with dogs and their owners.  I promised I'd let you know how I got on with Animal Aunts.  It's a daunting experience leaving your house and animals in the care of someone you have only met for an hour.  What, I wondered, was I going to do if I loathed the Aunt on sight - cancel the operation?  I needn't have worried.  I really struck gold with Sonja.  She arrived in plenty of time, despite a long drive up from Preston and the fact that I had to leave for the hospital at 8am, so I introduced her to everybody and showed her where eveything was.  I had also written a lengthy Wife Swap-style manual detailing all the animals' foibles and routines.  I rang her a few times from the hospital and it was obvious that everything was under control - and it was clear, too, that each time we spoke, she had at least one dog sitting on top of her!  When I arrived home it was obvious that the dogs adored her and now that I am unable to take them on their usual long walks, probably miss her dreadfully.  She had even been so nice as to sweep out and tidy the byre!  So, would I use Animal Aunts again?  It's an expensive way of caring for your animals in your absence but yes, I would - although I would almost certainly insist on Sonja.  I feel it's unlikely I would find anyone else so loving, caring and willing - whatever the agency promise....

Now the dogs are having to get used to a more sedentary life and also to keep out of the way of my crutches and trolley.  I have run over Titus a few times as he's slower to move out of the way and he's taken a while to understand that no, he cannot climb on to my knee, but Rosco is more wary and keeps well clear of trolley wheels and crutches.  He has even learned to pick up his toys so that I don't trip over them!  It's a reminder of adaptable dogs are.

Finally, I just want to say thanks to everyone who has wished me a speedy recovery - and to Paula, especially!
