My usual monthly vet bill is between £250 and £500 a month.  The bulk of this is medication for 15 year old Labrador Jay: for her arthritis and liver condition.  Add in special food and all the extras and she is a pretty expensive dog! 

A recent Blue Cross survey found that Britain's 26 million pet owners spent a staggering £14.9 BILLION on their animals last year. Just because we have the science and technology to give an injured or sick dog a long and healthy life, should we use it?   Rather like that old fillm, Indecent Proposal, perhaps we all need to ask ourselves: does our pet have a price?  Bills for surgical procedures are £5,000 per pet, on average. And pet insurance is not necessarily the answer as premiums have jumped by more than one third in just a year - and there are far too many stories where insurance companies have refused - often on flimsy grounds - to pay up.  So how much is YOUR dog worth?
